A World Heritage site known for the cherry blossom that fills its hillsides. Outside the flowering season, the layering of the valley town and the mountains is the thing to see.
The cherries here were not planted as a garden. Pilgrims of the mountain-ascetic tradition donated trees one at a time as offerings, and the result is tens of thousands of them covering the mountain. So it is not an avenue of trees but the slope itself that turns white, and because nearly all of them are the same wild mountain cherry, which opens its leaves with its flowers, the colour reads pale rather than pink.
Kamisenbon stands at around 600 metres, some 200 metres above Shimosenbon at the foot. Tradition holds that the central image of Kinpusenji at the top of the mountain was carved from cherry wood, which is why cherry has been treated here as the sacred tree. The trees on the mountain are put at thirty thousand, divided by name into four bands from Shimosenbon up to Okusenbon.
The blossom runs from early to mid-April. There is a large difference in altitude, so it opens from the lower groves upward, the peak climbing the mountain over about ten days. This camera, in the upper groves, comes into bloom a few days after the foot of the mountain is full.
