Mount Asama from Tsumagoi live camera — Tsumagoi, Gunma
An active volcano with long, gentle flanks. The plume and the snow near the summit tell you both the season and how active it is.
What you are looking at
An active volcano trailing a long, gentle skirt, seen from the village of Tsumagoi on its northern side. It stands 2,568 metres.
The skirts are this wide because what erupted flowed down in every direction from a single point at the summit, over and over. In the Tenmei eruption of the Edo period, lava ran down the northern flank and remains today as a field of rock with hardly a plant on it. That northern flank is what this camera faces.
Tsumagoi, where the camera stands, grows summer cabbage on the free-draining soil of ash fallen from this mountain, helped by the cool summers; the fields run from 700 to 1,400 metres up the northern flank. The very ground you are watching from is land the volcano made.
Winter mornings are the surest. It is not a mountain with heavy snow, but the snow stays in streaks on the slope, which makes the relief easier to read. For steam, come around dawn when it is coldest: the same amount of vapour condenses whiter the lower the temperature. The average date of first snow is 31 October.
Summer afternoons bring thunderclouds that can hide the mountain entirely. From mid to late October the broadleaf trees on the skirts turn. Updates come once an hour.
