A camera on the same sea from the heights of the Shikoku side. It faces the opposite way from Mount Washu, so the islands line up differently.
This plateau has a flat top. A hard layer of lava spread and set on top of it, so as everything around eroded, the summit alone stayed flat and high. You look down at the sea from a flat rim about 400 metres up, so the islands do not spread out sideways — they stack from near to far.
The name Goshikidai covers five peaks — Kohou, Ouhou, Seihou, Kokuhou and Hakuhou, the red, yellow, blue, black and white. Negoroji, one of the eighty-eight temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage, stands on the blue peak, so the top of the tableland holds a pilgrim route and a sea lookout together. It is around 400 metres up, inside Setonaikai National Park.
From spring into early summer haze settles in. To see the silhouettes layered one behind another, come in autumn or winter when the air is clear.
The Setonaikai national park was designated in 1934, together with Unzen and Kirishima, which makes it one of the first national parks in Japan. Its area is spread across eleven prefectures, so it is not one block of land but a park that gathers in a sea and its edges. The water and the islands in the frame are part of it.
Evening. The view faces west to southwest, so around sunset the water lights up and the islands cut out black. Open it back to back with the Mount Washu camera on the same sea and you are looking at the same islands from the other side, which makes the difference in their arrangement clear.
