One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. At 1,366 metres, it is the mountain that feeds the powerful hot springs of Tamagawa and Goshogake.
Steaming pools and vents are scattered across the summit area, with vapour coming directly out of the ground. Tamagawa Onsen at its foot is among the most strongly acidic springs in Japan, and the volume from its single source is among the largest in the country. In other words, this volcano is better known for the names of its hot springs than for any record of eruption.
The water at Tamagawa Onsen precipitates hokutolite, a lead-bearing mineral protected as a Special Natural Monument. As for eruptions: the Karanuma crater at the summit erupted in February 1678, and at the end of August 1949 a mudflow about 0.8 metres thick and 200 metres long came down. On 11 May 1997 a landslide near Sumikawa Onsen on the northern foot triggered a phreatic eruption, and the debris flow swept away the hot-spring inn.
Steam looks whiter and thicker on cold days. When it seems to surge, the temperature has usually dropped rather than the volcano stirred; in summer the same volume barely shows.
Mornings are better. Cloud builds over the Tohoku mountains in the afternoon, and the summit is often hidden by early afternoon. In December it is dark before four. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
