One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The peak in the frame is Chausudake, and the vents that make the white sit just below its summit.
There is a ropeway, so the mountain is easy to climb, but it is known for something else as well: wind. It stands across the northern edge of the Kanto plain, so in winter the snow clouds coming in from the Sea of Japan side run into it and stop. On a day when the mountain is white and only the steam is rising, open a camera on the Kanto side too: if that one is clear, you are watching this mountain hold the snow back.
The lava dome of Chausudake now in the frame was built by the eruption of 1408 to 1410. Pyroclastic flows and mudflows came down, the Naka River ran yellow, and more than 180 people are recorded to have died. Only small eruptions since: fish in the river were affected in July 1881, and the last eruption was in November 1963.
Early October brings the autumn colour. On Nasu it starts near the summit and works down to the foot in about a week, so if you open the camera daily you can see the boundary of colour descending.
Mornings are better. On a windy mountain the cloud moves fast in the afternoon and the summit appears and disappears. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
