One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It is a relatively young lava dome standing north of the Myoko group.
Steam rises from the summit area, which makes it look paler than the mountains around it. A young volcano has not yet grown a full cover of trees, so bare rock and vapour show through, and set beside its neighbours the colour is simply different. That paleness is how you pick it out of the frame.
Young does not mean small. In an eruption about 1,000 years ago a pyroclastic flow reached the Sea of Japan and a lava flow ran 6.5 kilometres. There are eruption records for 1361 and 1773 as well. More recently, a fissure eruption began in the small hours of 28 July 1974; ash fell up to 100 kilometres to the north-east, and three climbers camped near the summit were killed by falling rock.
Steam shows best on cold days. On a winter morning the vapour goes white immediately, so plumes that are invisible in summer stand up in clear streaks. In the snow season, the places where steam comes out can stay bare and dark while everything around them turns white.
As to how young young is, this mountain is reckoned to have begun forming about three thousand years ago. That puts it among the youngest volcanoes in the country, and it started erupting around the close of the Jomon period. It is why the shape has not fallen in and the outline of the dome is still there to read.
Mornings are the time. This is a mountain over 2,000 metres, and cloud builds from late morning and often hides the summit. A still image, refreshed every two minutes. Nothing shows after dark.
