One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It is a plateau spreading west of Tateyama, and the area called Jigokudani gives off steam containing hydrogen sulphide, so access is still restricted.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route runs through here. From mid-April into June, walls of snow stand on both sides of the road — the sight known as the Snow Corridor, sometimes over ten metres high. From late September into early October the moorland grass turns and the whole tableland goes red-brown. The altitude is high, so the colour comes earlier here than almost anywhere in Honshu. Tateyama's first snow falls on 12 October in an average year.
No magmatic eruption has occurred here for some 40,000 years, and activity is confined to phreatic explosions and steam in the Jigokudani. That does not make it safe: on 4 November 1967 two people camping were killed by volcanic gas. In May 2010 sulphur burned at Kajiyajigoku and formed several flows of molten sulphur, the largest about two metres wide and twenty metres long.
From November the Alpine Route closes and the plateau is buried. For those months this camera is effectively the only way to see Midagahara at all.
