One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. Along with Mount Fuji and Tateyama, it has drawn worship since ancient times. Its eruption record ends in the Edo period, and it has been quiet since.
It lies in the heavy-snow country of the Sea of Japan coast, where snow is deep and lasts. The trails are open roughly from July to October; in the rest of the year almost nobody goes up. The camera runs all year, so you can see Hakusan in winter with nobody on it. First snow falls on 21 October in an average year.
The last eruption was in 1554 to 1556, when small pyroclastic flows came from Midorigaike near the summit and the craters around it. Falling rock destroyed shrine buildings, and the Tedori River is recorded to have run turbid and killed the river fish. Nothing has erupted in the 450 years since, and no steam has been confirmed at the summit. Only the steam fields at the foot, such as Jigokudani, remain of the heat.
Alpine flowers come in July and August, but the camera views the mountain from a distance, so the flowers themselves do not show. You read the season instead from the snow retreating and the green reaching higher.
Mornings. Damp air comes off the sea easily, and cloud builds in the afternoon to hide the summit. On a clear winter morning the air is sharp and the white mountain separates cleanly from the sky.
