What you are looking at
Muddy water moving upstream is not a flood; it is the tide. This river barely changes height from the mouth to the interior, so the Ariake's large tidal range reaches all the way in. What it carries is the fine mud of the Ariake, and that is why the water always looks turbid.
That same gentleness works the other way in rain. The water cannot get out to sea, so rain that has fallen upstream comes down with nowhere to go and the basin floods widely. It does not rise sharply and drop sharply the way other Kyushu rivers do.
Put the word gentle into numbers: the bed falls about 1 in 60 upstream, and in the lower reaches that drops to between 1 in 1,500 and 1 in 45,000. Which is to say almost flat. The channel is 47 kilometres, the basin 341 square kilometres, and the source is Mount Shinroku at 447 metres. The whole basin fits inside Saga Prefecture, with about 120,000 people.
The largest flood on record was that of July 1990, when most gauges in the basin recorded over 60 millimetres an hour and Yahazu upstream recorded 88, its own highest ever. In July 2009 the second-highest level on record was reached at Myoken Bridge, and ten large floods have been recorded here since 1926. That is many for a river of this size.
The end of the rainy season in June and July, and typhoons, move it most. Leave evacuation decisions to the information from local authorities. The feed rotates between points.
