Electric Peak live camera — Wyoming
A 3,343 m peak at the northern edge of the park, seen head on across dry grassland. Early in the day the low light picks out every fold in the slope.
What you are looking at
Rolling dry grassland in the foreground, with a mountain standing face-on beyond it. The lower half of the mountain is the dark green of conifers, and only around the summit does reddish-brown rock show. Lower ridges run away to the right.
Electric Peak is 3,343 metres high and stands at the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park. The dry grassland in front is the lowland that spreads along the park’s north side, and because an unbroken treeless slope lies between it and the mountain, the mountain’s outline comes out clearly.
The name goes back to a survey party in 1872. Caught by a thundercloud on the summit, they wrote down the discharge they felt from their hair and fingertips, and the peak has been called Electric ever since. The low ground in the foreground was cut by a river, and because the snow lies shallow there, animals come down to it in winter.
In the morning the light falls at an angle and the folds of the mountainside show dark.
This is the highest summit of the Gallatin Range. The range itself is built of sedimentary rock, but at this peak magma came up from below and set between the beds, and only that harder rock was left standing as the wear went on. The bare reddish rock showing near the top is there because it is not the same stone as the ground around it.
It is a still camera and the refresh interval is not published. Mountain time, fifteen to sixteen hours behind Japan. Once it is dark, almost nothing appears.
