Rocky Mountain National Park live camera — Colorado
A mountain park with a road over a 3,000-metre pass. Snow holds on the ridges through midsummer, and thunderheads build most afternoons.

A mountain park in Colorado with more than sixty peaks above 3,600 metres.
The road across the park tops out at 3,713 metres, the highest continuous paved road in the United States. At that altitude trees do not grow, which is why the ridgeline in frame carries no forest. What spreads above the treeline is alpine tundra, the same low vegetation found inside the Arctic Circle. In winter the pass road is shut by snow, and the months it can be driven are only a few. Snow that falls on this ground melts into the first water of the Colorado River.
The Continental Divide runs through the middle of the park. The snow that feeds the Colorado River falls on the western side; snow landing on the eastern side of the same ridge is bound for the Atlantic. The road over the pass opened in 1932, and before that there was no way to cross this height by car at all.
Mountain time runs 15 to 16 hours behind Japan, so around midnight in Japan it is morning there.
The elk in this park were once hunted out altogether. What came back grew from animals brought in from Yellowstone in 1913, and people now gather in the autumn rut to hear the calls carry down the valleys. They did too well, though: the willow and the scrub were eaten out, so parts of some valleys are fenced off while the growth is brought back.
Winter days are short and stay dim even at noon. Even in summer, thunderclouds build in the afternoon. Being a still camera, it returns a black frame while it is night there.
