A camera on the California coast, in the forest where the tallest trees on Earth grow. There are four cameras — shore, prairie and overlook — and all of them refresh once a minute.
These redwoods still include individuals over 100 metres tall. What lets them get that high is the fog rolling in off the Pacific, which delivers water even through the dry part of the year, and the forest sits entirely inside that fog belt. Only around five per cent of the original old growth is left, and the area was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1980.
The tallest known tree in the world stands in this forest, but its location is not published, to keep its roots from being trampled. The forest is run jointly as national park and state park with no boundary between the two, which is why the word State appears in the name at all. Work also continues to turn the young stands planted after logging back into forest.
This is foggy country, so a frame painted flat white comes back often. Even when the fog lifts, the height of the trees does not fit into a single frame.
These trees sprout from the stump even after they are felled. Where young trunks stand in a ring around the place a parent tree once stood, they have all come up together from around the cut stump. The bark runs as much as thirty centimetres thick and stands up to fire and to insects, so a fire going through does not burn to the heart of the trunk, and a good many of the trees carry on living with the char still on them.
