The Picket Range seen from just outside the visitor center — a row of sharp, glacier-hung peaks.

What you are looking at

A row of peaks carrying glaciers stands directly ahead. The camera watches them from outside the visitor centre, across one valley.

There are more than 300 glaciers in this area, more than anywhere else in the United States outside Alaska. Damp air off the Pacific hits the mountains and drops snow, and enough of it survives the summer without melting. The Picket Range has no roads through it and is known for how thin and steep its crests are; what the camera shows is the view from outside that country.

This became a national park only in 1968, late by the standards of the system. The glaciers here lost roughly half their area over the twentieth century, and the park service now measures a selected few of them each year to follow the change. Outside Alaska, few national parks in the country see fewer visitors than this one.

This is mountain weather, so whether it is clear is something you only find out by opening the page.

In the middle of the park there are three hydroelectric stations belonging to the city of Seattle. They take the water coming off the glaciers behind dams and drop it, building began in the 1920s, and part of the electricity Seattle uses is still made here. The reason the dammed stretch is handled separately, wedged in between the park units, is that the generating was here before the park was.

Pacific time, sixteen to seventeen hours behind Japan; around one in the morning in Japan is local morning. It is a still image, and nothing shows at night.
