Despite being called the New River, this is held to be one of the oldest rivers in North America. It was already flowing here before the mountains rose, and because it kept cutting faster than the land could lift, it now runs straight across the ranges and heads north. The gorge is around 300 metres deep. The steel arch bridge facing you spans 518 metres and was the longest arch in the world when it was built. It was raised to national park status in 2020, making it one of the newest national parks in the country.
Before the bridge, crossing the gorge meant a forty-minute road down to the river and back up the other side. It now takes under a minute. On the third Saturday in October the road is closed to traffic so that people can walk across, and parachutists jump from the deck. Down in the gorge are the remains of coal towns.
What made the towns on the valley floor possible was the railway that came through in 1873; the coal went out by wagon, not by water. Brick kilns for baking the coal into coke were put up here and there along the gorge, and those kilns, shaped like beehives, still stand in rows among the trees. When the way the railway shipped changed, the towns lost their purpose and the people left.
