Mount Makushin live camera — Alaska
An 1,800 m volcano on the same island as Dutch Harbor, one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States. Its summit carries an icefield of about 40 km².

A volcano 1,800 metres high on Unalaska Island in Alaska. Its summit is covered by an ice field of some 40 square kilometres.
The same island holds Dutch Harbor, one of the leading fishing ports in the United States by volume landed. This is a volcano on an island where a lot of people live, so the observatory watches it closely. There is heat under the ice, and fumaroles and hot springs are scattered over the flanks; using that geothermal heat for electricity has been under discussion for a long time. The last time it put out ash was 1995, on a small scale. Being an Aleutian island, there is a great deal of fog and low cloud, and days when the summit is visible are limited. The harbour itself is on the far side of the mountain and does not appear in the frame.
Unalaska and Dutch Harbor were bombed by Japanese aircraft in June 1942. The Aleutians were the only ground anywhere near the American mainland where fighting actually took place, and the islands further west, Attu and Kiska, became battlefields after this. Gun positions and concrete pillboxes from that time still stand around the harbour. In 2020 a swarm of earthquakes under the volcano led the alert level to be raised on the possibility of an eruption, though none followed.
