A camera in the national park where low mountains meet the rocky Maine coastline, on the eastern edge of the United States.
Cadillac Mountain inside the park is only 466 metres, but that is the highest point on the Atlantic seaboard — which makes it one of the first places in the contiguous United States the morning sun reaches from autumn through winter. This park was not assembled by government purchase: people who did not want the place lost donated their own land, and it was established in 1919 as the first national park in the east.
A fire in 1947 burned across much of the eastern side of the island. What grew back was not spruce but birch and poplar, which is why one belt of hillside turns colour in autumn while the belt beside it stays dark green. The line between the two is the edge of that burn.
Eastern time runs 13 to 14 hours behind Japan. 10pm in Japan is morning there, making this one of the few cameras where you can watch another continent's morning after dinner.
Seventy-two kilometres of gravel road run through the island with no cars on them. They were laid out for carriages, with seventeen stone bridges, and one benefactor spent close to thirty years putting them in. They are walking and cycling routes now, and because nothing was paved, the sound that carries into the woods along them has hardly changed.
It is a still camera, and nothing shows while it is night there.
