What you are looking at

A park in Michigan made up entirely of an island in Lake Superior. Ten cameras are placed on ridges, in coves and at the dock.

Wolves and moose have been counted on this island every year since 1958 — the longest continuous study of a predator and its prey anywhere in the world. Because it is an island, movement in and out is limited and changes in numbers are not carried in from outside; that is what makes the observation work. Moose sometimes swim across the lake from the mainland. The park closes for the winter, and it is the only national park in the United States that shuts completely. Set the ten cameras side by side and you can see the weather divide between the east and west ends of the island.

Wolves are thought to have reached the island in the late 1940s, in a winter when the lake froze and joined it to the mainland. Their numbers fell away over the decades, and after only two were left in 2016, wolves from the mainland have been brought in since 2018.

Copper was being dug on this island as long as four and a half thousand years ago. It is an unusual place where copper lies at the surface as rock with nothing mixed into it, and more than a thousand of the pits that were dug are still there. Island copper, hammered out into tools and ornaments, has been found at sites a long way from here. Many of the hollows now under forest are those workings.

Eastern time, thirteen to fourteen hours behind Japan; around ten at night in Japan is local morning. It is a still image, and nothing shows at night.
