What you are looking at

A camera beside the road that runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge in Virginia, looking down into the valley. It refreshes every fifteen minutes.

Skyline Drive runs for 169 kilometres along the ridge, and the park is a long narrow strip following it. It is forest now, but before it was a park this was farmland and cutover. The people living here moved out when it was designated in 1935, and the trees have come back over the nearly ninety years since, which is why the forest is of fairly uniform age.

When the park was created there were almost no bears left here. They came back as the forest did, and by area this is now one of the densest bear populations in the east. The Appalachian Trail runs along the ridge for 162 kilometres inside the park.

The camera looks down, so when haze or cloud settles in the valley the ground below disappears. Sometimes only the ridge stands out above a sea of cloud.

The ridge road itself was built as relief work in the middle of the Depression. Construction began in 1931, so the road was through before the park was designated. The digging and the stonework were done with hands and simple machines, and much of the stone walling at the overlooks along it is the original.

Eastern time, thirteen to fourteen hours behind Japan; around ten at night in Japan is local morning. It is a still image, and nothing shows at night.
