A shallow stretch of water facing Nakaumi. Bewick’s swans arrive in winter, scattering white dots across the surface.
That this became a place for birds is partly what followed from people dividing up the land. Nakaumi is a brackish lake connected to the sea, and one section walled off for reclamation was left as shallow water; it is now managed as a park for waterbirds. Nakaumi itself was designated a Ramsar site in 2005.
Nakaumi was being diked and converted to fresh water from the 1960s, but the plan was reconsidered and abandoned in 2002. The shallow water here, and the birds that come down on it, are what was left after that reversal. As places where Bewick’s swans winter in numbers go, this is among the more southerly in Japan.
November to February is the main season, with numbers rising from late October and the birds heading north in March.
Open it morning or evening. During the day the birds go out to the surrounding paddies, so the water is fullest in the early morning before they leave and in the evening when they return. It shows one point on a wide sheet of water, so look at it expecting to search the frame for the birds. Updates come once an hour.
