One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The camera shows the valley where the water that supplies Noboribetsu Onsen comes out of the ground.
The valley is the scar of an explosion crater. Steam now fills the hollow that a steam blast once blew open. Hot water and vapour come out of the valley floor in dozens of places, and a boardwalk is laid across it, which makes this an unusual thing: a crater people can walk into. The water piped to the inns at Noboribetsu is drawn from here.
The whole area including this valley lies inside a caldera three kilometres across, formed by large eruptions between 80,000 and 45,000 years ago. Hiyoriyama, just by the valley, is a lava dome built about 15,000 years ago, and the most recent eruption came from the line of craters running from Hiyoriyama through Oyunuma to Urajigoku, roughly 200 years ago. Its deposits lie on top of ash from the 1663 eruption of Usu, which is how the date is known.
Winter is the best of it. The colder it gets, the whiter and thicker the steam becomes, with the rock showing between the white of the snow and the white of the vapour. In summer the same volume barely registers.
A still image, refreshed every two minutes. Because it looks into the valley rather than at a peak, cloud rarely makes the picture unusable.
