One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The camera looks head-on at the bare rock of the summit from Shikabe, on the shore of Uchiura Bay.
The mountain is 1,131 metres. That jagged outline is not its original shape. The summit collapsed in the eruption of 1640, and what stands today is what was left. Nothing grows up there, so the collapse is not hidden by vegetation — you are looking straight at it.
The material that collapsed in 1640 went into both the sea and the lakes. What entered Uchiura Bay raised a tsunami in which more than 700 people along the coast drowned, and the rivers it dammed became Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma — an eruption that made lakes. More recently, the eruption of 17 June 1929 sent a plume to 13,900 metres, killed two people and damaged more than 1,900 houses.
Mornings are the safest bet. The mountain is close to the sea, cloud builds through the day, and the summit is often lost by the afternoon.
Winter into spring is the seasonal turning point. The bare summit is broad enough that snow, once it settles, picks out the shape in detail. Between the bare rock of summer and the snow-lined ridges of spring it hardly looks like the same mountain.
