A wide view out over the open ground from the southern edge of the mire. Pools are scattered through it, and on clear days Mount Rishiri floats to the west.
The pools scattered across the frame were not dug. Peat accumulates at different rates in different places, so hollows are left behind as the ground around them rises, and water collects in them. They formed over hundreds or thousands of years as the mire grew, and they are the evidence that a plain which looks flat is in fact not uniform.
What you see is the southern edge of the mire, with a boardwalk running out into the open ground behind the centre. The Sarobetsu plain is part of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park and was listed under the Ramsar Convention in 2005; the listed area runs to more than two thousand hectares.
From late June into early July day lilies bloom across the whole expanse and the moor turns yellow; towards mid-July the white heads of cotton grass sway. From late September into October the grasses turn and the whole mire goes red-brown. Winter reduces it to unbroken snowfield, but the air is clear then and the odds of seeing Mount Rishiri are good.
For Rishiri, come in the evening; for the flowers, in the morning with the light behind you. Updates come once an hour.
