One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. A grey lava dome sits on the summit, unmistakable even from a distance.
The mountain is 1,041 metres. That round mass is lava pushed up in an eruption at the start of the twentieth century; it cooled and hardened but never left the summit. Nothing grows on it, so it stays grey while everything around it turns green or white. Steam still escapes from the edge of the dome.
The scale this volcano is capable of is written in Edo-period records. The 1667 eruption put out 2.8 cubic kilometres of material and left two metres of pumice north of Tomakomai. The 1739 eruption was larger still at four cubic kilometres, dropping a metre of ash around what is now New Chitose Airport and several centimetres as far off as Daisetsuzan.
It stands south of Lake Shikotsu and is clearly visible from the streets of Tomakomai. Being a low mountain, it fits into the frame all the way to the top.
In winter the slopes go white and the contrast between the grey dome and the white steam is at its sharpest. Days are short in Hokkaido: in December it is already dark by the middle of the afternoon, about an hour earlier than the mainland feels. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
