Mount Iwaki live camera — Hirosaki, Aomori
A free-standing peak visible from anywhere on the Tsugaru plain. Its long, spreading flanks above the apple orchards are a familiar sight.

One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It stands alone above the Tsugaru plain at 1,625 metres, visible from anywhere on it.
Its skirts run out a long way to left and right, and because nothing else nearby is high, you see the same mountain from wherever you stand on the plain. In Tsugaru it has always served as the compass. The familiar view of it rising beyond apple orchards exists because those orchards spread across its lower slopes.
Every eruption in historical times has been phreatic, and the largest was in 1600, when the Torinoumi crater erupted in February and again in July and sent down mudflows. There was a smaller eruption in 1863. Nothing since, but after an earthquake at the foot in January 1970 the water at Dake Onsen rose in temperature and trees died, and in May 1978 vigorous steam was found in Akakurazawa on the north-east side.
First snow falls on 21 October in an average year. On the morning after it lands, the white and the dark rock separate most sharply. The date swings widely, though, sometimes by a full month.
Mornings are better. Cloud builds over the Tohoku mountains in the afternoon, and on many days the summit is hidden by early afternoon. Winter days are short: in December it is dark before four. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
