One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The camera shows a pond beside Sukayu Onsen, clouded by steam and hot water.
The water is murky because heat and hot water rise into it from below. Sulphur hangs in the air here, and the ground around the pond carries little vegetation. Hakkoda gets some of the heaviest snow anywhere in the world, so in winter this hollow is the one place that does not fill in: a steaming dip left in the middle of a white plain.
This pond is itself the trace of the most recent eruption. Over the last 6,000 years the northern Hakkoda group has erupted at least eight times, and the three most recent were all here at Jigokunuma. Above the ash that fell from Towada in 915 lie the traces of one phreatic eruption in the thirteenth or fourteenth century and two more between the fifteenth and seventeenth. The hollow in the frame, then, was made a few hundred years ago.
Steam looks whiter and thicker on cold days. When it seems to surge, the temperature has usually dropped rather than the volcano stirred; in summer the same volume barely shows.
First snow falls on 19 October in an average year. Mornings are better, since cloud builds over the Tohoku mountains in the afternoon. A still image refreshed every two minutes lets you wait for a gap and open it again.
