One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The Bandai-Azuma Skyline crosses this mountain, and the Oana crater near Jododaira is still venting steam.
This volcano goes through cycles of heightened activity. Steam increases, access around the crater is restricted, and the pattern has repeated more than once. The camera is here to watch for those changes, not to show a view.
The record here is unusually specific. In the eruption of 7 June 1893 two people surveying near the crater were killed. In February 1950 ash fell as far as Tsuchiyu Onsen, acidic water killed fish downstream and damaged a power station. From January to February 2019 molten sulphur flowed inside the Oana crater, and on 7 September 2021 a hole ten metres across and about five metres deep opened in its floor.
That said, steam looks whiter and thicker on cold days. When it seems to increase, the temperature has usually dropped rather than the volcano stirred.
First snow falls on 26 October in an average year. Autumn colour usually peaks in early October, give or take one to two weeks. Mornings are better: cloud builds before noon, so on many days the only clear spell is early. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
