Mount Fuji from Lake Tanuki live camera
The classic head-on view of Fuji across the water. On a windless morning the whole mountain is mirrored in the lake.
What you are looking at
Mount Fuji stands square across the water — the classic view from the mountain's western foot. Lake Tanuki sits at roughly 650 metres, on the southern edge of the Asagiri highlands, with nothing between it and Fuji to block the line of sight. Summit to skirt, the whole mountain fits in one frame.
On a windless morning the surface turns to glass and a second, upside-down Fuji appears on the lake. When the wind picks up the reflection breaks and only the mountain is left, so the same framing tells you how hard the wind is blowing that day.
Tanukiko began as a small pond called Tanukinuma and was dammed and enlarged around 1935 as an irrigation reservoir. Because it sits due west of the mountain, around 20 April and again around 20 August the sun rises directly out of the summit — the view known as Diamond Fuji.
You are looking at Fuji's western slope. Morning light comes from behind the camera and picks out every fold in the rock; by late afternoon the mountain is backlit and reduced to a dark outline. Winter air is dry and sharpens the edges; on summer mornings the summit is often buried in cloud.
The image is a still, refreshed once an hour. You cannot follow the clouds, but open it a few times in a day and you will see the mountain come and go. Nothing is visible after dark.
