Yumigahama Beach, Minami-Izu live camera
A bow-shaped stretch of sand in a sheltered cove. Busy with swimmers in summer; the rest of the year only the waves and the pines move.

A beach curved like a drawn bow, with a calm inlet behind it, near the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula.
The beach draws such a clean arc because headlands reach out on both sides and close the bay, so the open-sea swell loses its force before it arrives. Even on the same peninsula, you do not get the white breaking surf of the coasts that face the open ocean here. The pine wood behind the sand has been kept to hold back sand and salt wind; on a windy day the way those trees move changes before the sea does.
The beach runs a little over a kilometre, with the mouth of the Aono river at its eastern end. Early cherries and rape flowers come out together along that river in February, making this one of the first parts of Izu to turn to spring. It is on the Environment Ministry’s list of a hundred fine shores.
The Izu Peninsula was not originally part of Honshu. It began as a chain of volcanic islands out in the southern sea, rode north on the Philippine Sea Plate, and collided with Honshu to be welded on. That history is still legible in the landforms, which is why it was certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018, and the headlands reaching out on either side are built from the rock of those old volcanoes. The sand on the beach is what is left of that rock once it broke down.
In summer there are swimmers; the rest of the year only the waves and the pines move. If you want to see it busy, come at midday in summer.
The morning calm is beautiful, and on a windless morning the inlet goes flat. Updates come once an hour, so reopening it may show the same picture. Nothing shows after dark.
