One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It looks over a cluster of monogenetic volcanoes, small craters scattered on land and under the sea alike.
The defining thing about this volcanic group is that there is no single mountain. Dozens of small craters, each of which erupted once and was finished, are spread across the eastern side of the Izu Peninsula. So there is nothing in the frame you can point at and call the volcano. What you see is the land itself, with several of those craters in it. In 1989 a submarine eruption off Ito built the Teishi Knoll — that is what it means to say some of the craters are in the sea.
The largest crater here is Omuroyama, built about 4,000 years ago. Kawagodaira erupted about 3,200 years ago, and about 2,700 years ago a fissure running from Iwanoyama to Ioyama erupted. Each of them erupted once and stopped. Instead of eruptions there are earthquakes: 20 swarms between 1978 and 1989, and 26 more between 1991 and 2011.
Early morning is the time. Steam looks whiter and thicker the colder it is. After midday, air rising up the slopes turns into cloud and often hides the high ground alone.
Summer into autumn is typhoon season. As one approaches the picture darkens and raindrops on the lens blur it.
