A ridge over 3,000 metres, seen from the Norikura plateau below. On a clear day you can pick out the unevenness of the peaks. The high point, Kengamine, stands 3,026 metres.
The season shows in how the snow lies. In May and June, snow is still on the ridge while the plateau has turned green, so the top and bottom of the frame are in different seasons. From late September into early October the colour comes down as far as the plateau. The difference in altitude is large, so the summit side and the plateau side turn about two weeks apart, and for a while coloured slopes and still-green slopes appear together.
For a mountain in the 3,000-metre class, it is unusually easy to reach: a road runs to Tatamidaira at 2,702 metres. Private cars have been kept out since 2003, leaving buses and taxis. Just below the summit are crater lakes such as Gongen-ike.
The road up to Tatamidaira reaches higher than any other paved road in Japan. That makes this one of the few 3,000-metre ranges you can see at close range without climbing it yourself. The catch is that the plateau and the summit differ by more than ten degrees; even in summer you need autumn clothes up there. All of this lies inside Chubu-Sangaku National Park, and Norikura still holds seven crater lakes of various sizes.
Mornings are best. In mountain country, cloud boils up from the valleys in the afternoon and the ridge is often gone by early afternoon. Even on a clear day, open it before noon if you want to be sure of seeing the mountain.
Updates come once an hour, so this is not the camera for waiting out a gap in the cloud.
