One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. A bus road climbs to nearly 2,700 metres here, and the camera looks at the line of summits from the Norikura plateau side.
The season shows in how the snow lies. In May and June, snow is still on the ridge while the plateau has turned green, so the top and bottom of the frame are in different seasons. This is the time of the road that runs between walls of snow.
There is no steam and no record of an eruption, yet this is an active volcano. Over the past 10,000 years it has erupted at least fourteen times around Kengamine and Gongon-ike, an average of once every 700 to 800 years, and the most recent eruption is thought to have been about 500 years ago. With no steam field at the summit, nothing of its activity can be read off the frame.
From late September into early October, the colour comes down as far as the plateau. The difference in altitude is large, so the summit side and the plateau side turn about two weeks apart. For a while, coloured slopes and still-green slopes appear in the same frame.
Mornings are best. In mountain country, cloud boils up from the valleys in the afternoon and the ridge is often gone by early afternoon. Even on a clear day, open it before noon if you want to be sure of seeing the mountain.
