What you are looking at
This river was once the road for coal. Before the railway came, coal that had been dug out was loaded onto flat-bottomed boats and carried down this current to the port at the mouth. The towns stand along the river because the arrangement from the era when the river was the road is still there.
The change in water level is itself the thing to watch. The flood plain is wide, so rising water covers the sandbars first, then the grass, and only then approaches the embankment. How far it has flooded tells you roughly where the level is.
The basin covers 1,026 square kilometres and about 620,000 people live in it. The source is Mount Umami in Kama, and after taking in the Honami at Iizuka and the Hikosan at Nogata the river comes out onto the plain and leaves for the Hibiki Sea at Ashiya. The channel is 61 kilometres. For its length it gathers a great many tributaries, so where the rain fell changes how the level behaves.
What moves this river is not typhoons but the rainy-season front. Seven large floods are on record since the Meiji era and most of them came from the rainy season; in June 1953 some 38,000 houses were inundated. More recently, in July 2003, Hinode Bridge and many other gauges set their highest levels on record one after another. The level climbs suddenly in local downpours, so it is better to open the camera early when rain is forecast.
The end of the rainy season in June and July, and typhoons, move it most. But the rougher the day, the darker the picture, and rain on the lens blurs it. Leave evacuation decisions to the information from local authorities. The feed rotates between points, so you may wait a little for the one you want.
