What you are looking at
There are this many weirs and gates because the water of this river has long been distributed to farmland. A weir holds the level up, a gate lets exactly the needed amount off to the side, and channels carry it round to the tea fields and paddies. What is in frame is less a natural current than the mechanism for dividing water between river and field.
So the lower the water, the better the structures show. The step of a weir, how far a gate is open, where a channel begins — all of it stands out on a dry bed.
The source is Mount Mikuni, 994 metres, where Fukuoka, Oita and Kumamoto meet. From there the river runs down the Hyuganokami gorge, takes in the Hoshino and others, and comes out onto the Chikugo plain. The channel is 61 kilometres and the basin 647 square kilometres, with about 160,000 people. Along the way it splits off the Okinohata, so the land itself says this is a river for distributing water.
Annual rainfall in the basin is 2,000 to 3,000 millimetres, most of it concentrated between June and early July. So the large floods come almost entirely from the rainy-season front; this is not a typhoon river. Besides June 1953, the floods of July 1990 and July 2012 were large, and the 2012 one exceeded the design flood discharge of the time. The season when the tea fields need water is the season the river turns rough.
The mouth is the Ariake Sea, so the tide moves the downstream level too. Rain moves it at the end of the rainy season and in typhoons. Leave evacuation decisions to the local authorities. The feed rotates between points.
