Yamakuni River live camera — Fukuoka / Oita border

It cuts through the rock towers of Yabakei on its way to the Suo Sea. Gorge upstream, open plain downstream — a big change in what the cameras show.

What you are looking at

The rock hills upstream are what this river left behind, over a long time, as it cut into a plateau of hardened pyroclastic flow. That is why the rock stands in columns: the more erodible parts went first, and the present shape is what remained. In the Edo period people spent some thirty years boring a passage through that rock face by hand.

Though it is one river, the width and the speed of the current are completely different upstream and down. Open the gorge stretch and the plain stretch one after the other and the difference is right there.

The channel is 56 kilometres and the basin 540 square kilometres. The source is Mount Hiko in Yamakuni, Nakatsu, at 1,200 metres. Only about 31,000 people live in the basin, which straddles the border of Fukuoka and Oita. Past the Yabakei gorge the river comes out onto the Nakatsu plain, splits off the Nakatsu River below Yamakuni Bridge, and enters the Suo Sea.

This one is the opposite: a typhoon river. Of the floods remembered since the Meiji era, every one but the rainy season of 1953 came from a typhoon. On 3 July 2012, five of the seven gauges on the river set record highs, and ten days later two of those five went higher still. Which is to say it can happen twice in a short span.

The gradient is steep, so the level rises quickly after rain. Leave evacuation decisions to the information from local authorities. The feed rotates between points.
