What you are looking at
A camera on a captive animal at a zoo, showing the wild cat that survives in Japan only on Tsushima.
This cat is found only on Tsushima because the island is a remnant of a time when it was joined to the continent. After the sea rose and cut it off, the population that had crossed over was left behind and carried on there. So a cat that exists nowhere else in Japan has close relatives on the mainland across the water. The numbers left on the island are not large, and it is designated as a species the state must protect; breeding programmes at zoos are the insurance against that.
Perhaps a hundred of these cats are left on Tsushima. Against the chance of that population falling further, zoos around the country have kept and bred them separately since the late 1990s, and Fukuoka is one of those places. The animal is about the size of a house cat, but with white patches behind the ears and a thick, short tail.
It sometimes moves at dawn and in the evening. Even so, it spends more of the day asleep, so if it is not in frame, treat it as something to check again in an hour.
The commonest cause of death found on Tsushima is being hit by a car. Signs along the island roads warn drivers, and passages have been built to take the animals underneath. This is not a cat that keeps to the hills: it comes out around the paddies and the villages too, so where it goes and where people drive end up overlapping.
Updates come once an hour. The enclosure is outdoors, so nothing shows after dark.
