What you are looking at
The water that carved Takachiho Gorge comes out at Nobeoka into the Hyuga Sea. Three rivers meet at the mouth, and the confluence during a rise is the thing to see.
The gorge upstream is what this river cut into rock formed from hardened pyroclastic flow from an Aso eruption. Vertical cracks form as such rock cools and sets, so the walls carry rows of what look like stacked columns. It is a place where rock the volcano made and the water that cuts it have become a single landscape.
That same river divides into three and comes back together at the mouth. Which channel swells and by how much during a rise is seen best at the confluence.
The pyroclastic flow that laid down the rock of the gorge came from an eruption of Aso about ninety thousand years ago. It travelled more than fifty kilometres from the caldera to reach this valley and stop, and the thick bed it left cooled and set here. The river doing the cutting is the one here now, but the rock being cut was carried in from a long way off by another volcano.
The end of the rainy season in June and July, and typhoons in August and September, move it most. The rougher the day, the darker the picture, and in strong wind the picture itself shakes. Leave evacuation decisions to the local authorities.
