What you are looking at
There is a large power facility upstream on this river. Ponds are built high and low, water is pumped up when electricity is in surplus and let fall to generate when it is needed — one of the larger such installations in the country. That the mountain stretch runs on so long also means there are valleys deep enough to hold that water.
The basin lies in the region with more typhoon landfalls than anywhere in Kyushu. A single typhoon can drop several hundred millimetres across the whole basin, and with mountain and sea so close together, that comes straight through into the level.
The source is Mount Sanpo in Shiiba, at 1,479 metres. The river comes a long way down through the mountains, takes in the Watari and others and reaches the plain at Kijo. It runs 75 kilometres over 474 square kilometres. About 30,000 people live in the basin, notably few among the Kyushu rivers listed here, which is another way of saying the mountain stretch with few people in it is long.
Mean annual rainfall in the basin is about 2,900 millimetres, 1.7 times the national average, and the upstream mountains get the most of it. And the cause of the major floods is, almost without exception, a typhoon. In the typhoon of 1950 eight people died and 11,000 houses were inundated. Rain that falls upstream heads for the sea over a short distance, so the few hours after a typhoon passes are what matter.
Typhoons in August and September, and the end of the rainy season from late June into July, move it most. Leave evacuation decisions to the local authorities.
