Kirishima Range from Ebino Plateau live camera

There are two clear seasons to catch. One is winter rime ice: Ebino is high, and on cold mornings from December to February the trees go completely white. Rime falls off within an hour or two once the sun reaches it, so open the camera between about seven and nine. The other is the Miyama-kirishima azalea from late May into early June, when the slopes turn pink. As the name suggests, it is the flower Kirishima is known for — but the season overlaps the rainy season, so you have to pick a clear day.
The plateau lies at around 1,200 metres, and Mount Karakuni, which encloses it, rises to 1,700 — the highest of the Kirishima range. Three crater lakes sit up here, Fudoike, Rokkannon-mi-ike and Byakushiike, a row of hollows still holding water.
Iozan, just at the edge of the plateau, erupted in 2018 for the first time in roughly 250 years. Since then there have been spells when the nearby prefectural road and the trails are closed according to the alert level, and parts of what you can see on screen can be off limits. The place name Ebino has a volcanic origin too: the susuki grass is said to have turned a shrimp-like colour where the fumes reached it, and the name followed from that.
As the name Kirishima, "fog island", implies, this is foggy country. Days when nothing is visible are not unusual, so don't give up after one try; open it again at a different hour.
