Bø is a settlement on the open-sea side of the Vesterålen islands. The camera sits at an observation point of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and is there to measure the weather, not for the view.
This is inside the Arctic Circle. In summer there are days when the sun does not set, and in winter days when it does not rise. To see the winter version, open it during the Japanese evening: around eight in the evening in Japan is midday there. Open it at that hour in December and midday stays a blue half-light.
The sea at this latitude stays unfrozen through the winter because warm Atlantic water runs north along the coast. So even through the polar night the water in this frame is waves, not ice. Facing the open sea, it takes the wind hard, and whether there is white water on the skerries tells you how rough the day is. This site also carries a camera on Andøya, at the northern end of the same Vesterålen group.
