Looking west and downward from a summit. A rocky ridge falls away in front, below it spreads a treeless plateau scattered with small ponds, and beyond that the sea, with a band of cloud over the horizon. A guy line supporting the camera cuts diagonally across the left of the frame.
Andøya is an island at the northern end of the Vesterålen group, and this point is at 69 degrees north, inside the Arctic Circle at 66 degrees 34 minutes.
The midnight sun runs roughly from 27 May to 19 July, 54 days, and the polar night roughly from 28 November to 16 January, 50 days (calculated from the sun’s declination on 2026-09-20; measured to the sun’s centre, these come out slightly shorter than the provider’s own figures, which allow for atmospheric refraction). Open it around seven in the morning Japan time in June and it is midnight there, still light.
Andøya has had a rocket range since 1962, launching sounding rockets to study the high-latitude atmosphere and the aurora. The absence of trees is down to the wind as much as the cold. The small pools scattered over the plateau are water lying in hollows the ice scoured out, and because the peat is thick and holds it, after rain there seem to be more pools than before.
