This is a test site of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Every mast and box in the row is a precipitation gauge, placed here to study how to measure snow correctly in wind. It sits on a mountain plateau at 991 metres, and the strength of the wind is exactly why this place was chosen as a test site.
It lies in the south of Norway, far from the Arctic Circle. Neither midnight sun nor polar night occurs here. Even with the same institute’s cameras of the same kind, day and night arrive quite differently than at the northern stations.
Measuring snow in wind is hard because the wind lifts the flakes over the mouth of the gauge, so the stronger it blows the lower the reading comes out. This site has been used in the World Meteorological Organization's snow intercomparison work, catching the same snowfall in many kinds of gauge at once to see how far they diverge. That is why so many similar posts stand in the frame.
