What you are looking at

The grassland of Kusasenri-ga-hama in the foreground, and behind it the plume rising from the Nakadake crater. This is the pairing Aso is known for.

Kusasenri-ga-hama is a shallow basin about a kilometre across — an old crater north of Mount Eboshi that has grassed over. Horses graze here from spring to autumn, and rain leaves a shallow pond in the middle. Behind it, Nakadake is still venting, and the white column from its crater runs up the top of the frame.

The Aso caldera measures roughly 25 kilometres north to south and 18 east to west, and the camera sits inside it. Mist pools inside the caldera in the mornings, and on clear autumn and winter mornings the whole view can go white. If you want a sure look, wait until the mist has lifted.

The basin was made by four great eruptions. The last was about 90,000 years ago, and ash from it is found as a layer as far away as Hokkaido. The 25-kilometre hole, far too big to fit in frame, is what an eruption on that scale leaves behind. Whether people can get near the Nakadake crater is decided by the current alert level. The ropeway was put out of action by the 2016 eruption, and a shuttle bus now runs up towards the crater in its place.

The colour of the grass moves with the year: green from May, gold from late October as it dies back, and sometimes under snow in winter. On the live feed you can see which way the wind is carrying the plume.
