One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It shows the grassland spread out in front of the Nakadake crater — an unusual framing in which the plume and the pasture fit into one picture.
That grassland is itself a crater floor. In front of the crater that is smoking now lies the bottom of an older one, grassed over. Grazing horses are sometimes in it. An active crater and a finished, green one stand one behind the other in the same frame.
The smoking crater of Nakadake is the northernmost of a compound crater 1,100 metres long running north to south, and in recent years it alone has been active. In the eruption of 27 April 1953 rock flew 600 metres south-west of the crater rim, killing six sightseers and injuring more than ninety. The cones around Kusasenri are young: Kishimadake about 4,000 years old, Ojodake about 3,600, and Komezuka, a little further off, about 3,300.
Mist collects inside the caldera in the morning. On clear autumn and winter mornings it can become a sea of cloud — magnificent from the outer rim, but from this camera, inside it, the picture goes white. If you want to be sure, open it after nine, once the mist has lifted.
The grass of Kusasenri turns green in May and dies back to gold from late October into November. Same framing, and the colour swaps out wholesale with the season.
