Oharano shrine live camera — Nishikyo, Kyoto
An old shrine at the foot of the western hills. The approach runs through woods, and with fewer visitors than the famous temples the quiet under the trees lasts a long time.
What you are looking at
A stone torii and an inscribed stone pillar beside a road, seen from slightly above. Beyond the torii are stone steps and woodland, and the approach disappears straight into the trees. A stone retaining wall and lanterns fill the lower half of the frame.
Oharano Shrine is said to have begun when Kasuga Taisha of Nara was invited here at the move of the capital to Nagaoka-kyo in 784, and it is also called the “Kasuga of Kyoto”. It sits at the foot of the Nishiyama hills, away from the famous temples and shrines of the city.
As a result there are few people. Even at hours when the other Kyoto cameras are filled with a band of visitors, this one often shows nothing but the torii and the steps. It is a camera that tells you about quiet rather than about crowds.
Unlike the temples and shrines of Higashiyama, the foot of the western hills is not continuous with the built-up city. Because of that, on a holiday when the other Kyoto cameras are filled with bands of people, this one can stay unchanged. The approach runs through woodland, so on a clear day the dappled light splits the path into sharp light and shade, while on an overcast day the whole frame reads flat.
Because the Kasuga deity was brought here, the messenger of the god is the deer, as it is in Nara. Past the torii stand deer in place of the usual guardian dogs, and the water for washing the hands comes from the mouth of a deer. The frame reaches only as far as the torii and the steps, so none of that is visible. As the tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara family, it was also a shrine visited on behalf of daughters.
Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh. Japan time. Fourteen cameras stream from one channel at once, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
