Jonangu shrine live camera — Fushimi, Kyoto
Known as a shrine of protection from misfortune, and famous for its garden of weeping plum. When the blossom opens from late February into March the approach grows visibly busier.
What you are looking at
A stone torii beside a road and a vermilion bridge railing, seen from above. Behind the torii is a planting of pines, and a crossing and roadway pass across the foreground. The shrine buildings themselves are hidden in the trees.
Jonangu was placed south of Heian-kyo and in time became the guardian shrine of the Toba detached palace built across this area. It is known as a shrine of hoyoke, the warding off of misfortune from a direction, and is also known for the blessing of cars. The Jokyu War of 1221 is said to have begun with troops gathered on the pretext of this shrine’s horseback archery.
Because the approach and the road overlap, cars come and go in the frame more visibly than people do.
The shrine buildings are hidden behind the trees, so the frame will not tell you how far the plums have opened. What it does show is how busy the approach and the road are, and in the weeping-plum season any change appears in the queue of cars before it appears in the people. The area where the Toba palace once stood is now ringed by trunk roads and expressway ramps, and the carriageway crossing the foreground is one of them.
The Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868 began just south of this shrine. The first exchange of fire between the old shogunate forces and the new government forces was around the Toba road, and the Toba in the name of the battle is the name of this district. Rather more than six hundred years after the Jokyu war, the same ground was the starting point of a war again.
Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh. Japan time. Fourteen cameras stream from one channel at once, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
