Kiyomizu-zaka slope live camera — Higashiyama, Kyoto
The approach that climbs to Kiyomizu-dera, souvenir shops packed along both sides. Early in the morning the stone paving is still visible; towards midday the slope fills with a solid band of people.
What you are looking at
A slope that forms the approach to Kiyomizu-dera, lined on both sides with souvenir shops and yatsuhashi sweet stalls. The camera looks down the slope from about the height of a shop awning, and a line of people runs from the bottom of the frame to the top.
Kiyomizu-dera, at the top of the slope, is said to have been founded in 778, and in 1994 it was inscribed as part of the World Heritage site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”. The veranda of its main hall stands on a timber frame projecting from the cliff. This slope is its entrance.
Because it is a video stream, the movement is there without waiting for an update. How packed the slope is reads at a glance.
Partway up, Sannenzaka branches off to the north and drops towards Kodai-ji by way of Ninenzaka. People climbing to Kiyomizu-dera and people turning onto that side street use the same slope, so the same number of visitors looks more crowded here than it would on a through road. As a rule of thumb: while the stone paving shows, it is quiet; once a band of people hides the stones, it is packed.
The shops along the slope sell yatsuhashi, a baked sweet said to take the shape of a koto. The main hall the people in the frame are climbing toward was rebuilt in 1633, paid for by Tokugawa Iemitsu, and its timbers are joined without nails. The hall has burned down and gone up again more than once, and what stands there now dates from the beginning of the Edo period.
Japan time. Once the shops close and only the street lamps remain, the outlines of people are still visible but the far end of the slope goes dark. Fourteen cameras share a single channel, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
