Heian Jingu shrine live camera — Sakyo, Kyoto
The great vermilion torii and the Otenmon gate. The approach is wide enough to read the density of the crowd from a distance. In October the Jidai Matsuri procession passes right here.
What you are looking at
A wide gravel precinct seen from the side. Vermilion halls with green tiled roofs stand at the back, and people cross the gravel as small points.
Heian Jingu was built in 1895, the 1,100th year after the capital moved to Heian-kyo. The halls are a reduced copy of the Chodoin, the government hall of that old capital, which is where the vermilion pillars and blue-green tiles come from. The great torii further along the approach stands about 24 metres tall.
The precinct is wide and little blocks the view, so whether it is crowded reads in one look. Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh.
The Jidai Matsuri on 22 October ends at this shrine. The procession leaves the Kyoto Imperial Palace, crosses the city and comes in here, so what the frame shows is the arrival rather than the passing. Of the city's three great festivals, alongside the Aoi Matsuri and the Gion Matsuri, this is the newest: it began in the same year as the shrine itself.
Not all of the buildings in the frame date from 1895. The inner sanctuary and the inner hall burned in a fire in 1976 and were rebuilt in 1979 with donations from around the country, so the vermilion and green on them were copied a second time. The gate and the great torii were not lost.
Japan time. After dark the white gravel stops returning light and only the outlines of the halls remain. The stream carries fourteen cameras on one channel, so it cannot be played inside this site.
