Daigo-ji temple live camera — Fushimi, Kyoto

The grounds of the temple where Toyotomi Hideyoshi held his famous blossom viewing. Cherry in spring, colour in autumn: only the background to the halls is repainted by the season.

What you are looking at

A stone-paved approach between white plastered walls and large pines. Temple roofs show above the wall, and benches stand at the side of the path.

Daigo-ji was founded in 874 and consists of Kami-Daigo on the mountain and Shimo-Daigo at its foot. The five-storey pagoda, built in 951, is the oldest surviving wooden building in Kyoto Prefecture. The flower-viewing party Toyotomi Hideyoshi held here in 1598 is remembered as the “Daigo no Hanami”. The temple is inscribed as part of the World Heritage site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”.

The approach is long and straight, so the way people fill it reads along its whole depth. Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh.

What the frame shows is the Shimo-Daigo side; Kami-Daigo is about an hour's climb up the mountain from here. The cherries open along the Shimo-Daigo approach first, and the autumn colour also starts with the nearer trees, so the turn of the season always begins at the front of the picture. A procession commemorating Hideyoshi's flower-viewing is still held on the second Sunday of April.

This temple began at the top of the mountain. The monk who built a hermitage in the year of its founding was Shobo, and the place was Upper Daigo. The halls of Lower Daigo at the foot were not in place until the tenth century, which is why the upper in the name is the older part and the lower the newer one.

Japan time. The shadows of the walls and pines are deep, and as the sun drops the foreground darkens first. Fourteen cameras run together on one channel, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
