The Edo-period tea house and pond that remain at the southern end of the imperial garden. It is quieter than a city centre has any right to be, and the colour of the garden's trees carries the season.
The building is a tea house that stood in the garden of a court noble's residence that once occupied this ground; it was built in the late Edo period, about two hundred years ago. The pond is called Kujo Pond. After the capital moved east in the Meiji era, the residences were cleared away and the ground became a broad park, but this tea house and its pond were kept. The lawns and gravel paths around it now are the footprint of where those residences stood.
An Itsukushima shrine stands at the edge of the pond. Tradition has it that Taira no Kiyomori moved the shrine here from Hyogo, and its gate is an unusual one, with the upper beam curved in a bow — counted as one of the three curious torii of Kyoto. The name of the teahouse is said to come from an old phrase meaning to gather the green of a garden. It opens to visitors on set days of the week.
Spring and autumn bring the greatest change. In spring the trees around the pond come into leaf; in autumn the colour turns. In winter the leaves are down and the outlines of the tea house and pond read most clearly.
