Fushimi Inari Taisha, main approach live camera
The approach to the tower gate of the shrine famous for its tunnels of torii. The grounds never close, so there are often people about even in the small hours.
What you are looking at
A large vermilion torii and the stone pillar carved “Fushimi Inari Taisha” stand in the frame. The main approach crosses in front of them, and people walk towards the tower gate.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of the roughly 30,000 Inari shrines said to exist across Japan, and is held to have been established in 711. The Senbon Torii that fill the hillside are the accumulated gates offered by people whose wishes were granted.
This shrine does not close its gates. Unlike the other temple and shrine cameras here, people can appear in the frame late at night and early in the morning. If you want to walk it while it is empty, those hours are the clue.
The rows of gates continue to the top of the mountain, and a full circuit of Inariyama takes about two hours. Most of the people in this frame turn back somewhere between the gate tower and the main hall, so how crowded it is here and how crowded it is up on the mountain are worth reading separately. The shrine draws some of the largest New Year crowds in the Kansai region, and over the turn of the year this approach stays full all day.
The gate the people are walking toward is said to have been given in 1589 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in a prayer for his mother to recover from illness, and it is large as shrine gates go. The main sanctuary behind it burned in the Onin war and was put up again in 1499. Both are national Important Cultural Properties.
Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh. Japan time. Fourteen cameras run together on one channel, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
